The Wild Scenery of the Wekiva River
Just a short drive from the urban sprawl of Orlando, the Wekiva River offers a glimpse into a remarkably preserved subtropical paradise. Fed by the pristine waters of Wekiwa Springs, this federally designated Wild and Scenic River snakes through miles of dense hardwood hammocks and pine flatwoods. The river basin acts as a crucial wildlife corridor, allowing Florida black bears, river otters, and white-tailed deer to move safely through the central region of the state. The Boiling Waters of Homosassa Springs Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is unique for its natural underwater observatory, which allows visitors to stand beneath the surface of a massive first-magnitude spring. The main spring pool serves as a natural hospital and rehabilitation center for injured manatees.
