Ichetucknee Springs State Park is world-renowned for its pristine, crystal-clear water and is a premier destination for tubing in Florida. Fed by nine named springs, the Ichetucknee River flows through shaded hammocks and limestone canyons. The water remains a refreshing 22°C (72°F) year-round, making it a perfect sanctuary for humans in the summer and a critical habitat for wildlife, including river otters, turtles, and wild turkeys.
Silver Springs and the Ancient Canopy
As one of America’s oldest commercial tourist attractions, Silver Springs State Park is famous for its historic glass-bottom boat tours, which have been operating since the late 1870s. The park’s massive first-magnitude spring vents feed the Silver River, surrounded by an ancient canopy of cypress and oak trees. From November to March, the spring run is closed to water activities as hundreds of these gentle giants seek out the reliable 22°C (72°F) waters to survive the colder ocean temperatures. A dedicated boardwalk allows visitors to view the manatees clearly through the transparent water without disturbing them, offering one of the most intimate wildlife encounters in the state.
Rainbow River’s Vibrant Currents
Rainbow Springs State Park boasts a rich history dating back thousands of years, with archaeological evidence showing that indigenous peoples utilized these waters. The spring run, known as the Rainbow River, is famous for its striking turquoise and sapphire hues and remarkably high visibility. Unlike many other springs, the park also features man-made waterfalls built into the limestone hillsides during its days as a private attraction, alongside a lush azalea garden that blooms vibrantly in early spring.
Weeki Wachee and the Mermaid Caves
Famously known as the “City of Live Mermaids,” Weeki Wachee Springs State Park features a unique, deep-water spring that feeds an underwater theater. Since 1947, performers have put on synchronized underwater shows using air hoses hidden in the limestone scenery. Beyond the kitschy, historic charm of the mermaid shows, the park offers access to the pristine Weeki Wachee River, which twists through coastal marshes toward the Gulf of Mexico.
Ginnie Springs Under the Moonlight
Ginnie Springs is a privately owned park located along the Santa Fe River, celebrated for having some of the clearest water in Florida. It is a world-class destination for certified scuba divers, who come to explore the intricate, flooded limestone caverns of the Ginnie Ballroom and Devil’s Spring System. At night, the park takes on a different energy, with campers gathering along the wooded banks under the stars, making it a popular spot for both outdoor adventure and social recreation.
